What to Look For In Aravos (the willow twigs)

1. The willow leaves should be long, not round; with smooth edges, and the stem should be somewhat red in color. All of the leaves should be fresh and green, and the top of the twig and the top leaf should be intact.

2. The willow twigs should be at least three handbreadths in length. If a twig is longer, and if the bottom part is invalid; the twig is usable if the upper three handbreadths are still valid.

3. If the top of the willow twig was broken off, it is invalid.

4. If a number of leaves fell off, or if the twig is dry, then one should consult with a Rabbinic authority.

5. Two aravos are required for fulfillment of the mitzvah.
